GOVERNMENT COLLEGE FOR WOMEN - 1950 to 2012
The Govt. College for Women, M. A. Road, Srinagar was established in 1950.
This pioneer institute of the state has played a vital role in imparting higher education to the women of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.
This premier centre of learning is situated in the heart of the city over a land area of about 8.4 acres.
At present there are over 6000 undergraduate and nearly 70 post graduate students on rolls.
The college with a rich faculty of 160 members and over a hundred non-teaching employees contributes to the overall academic, intellectual and physical development of the students.
It offers a variety of under graduate courses in various fields of study-Bachelors in Arts, Science, Home Science, Computer application and Mass Communication & Multimedia Production.
A few vocational courses are also offered to facilitate the spread of easy, accessible non-formal education.
The college runs different IGNOU Convergence programmes through the centers located in it.
More than 700 students get benefited through this distance mode of education.
The college also provided hostel facility to the students of far flung areas and has the distinction of housing Hub of Edu-sat Net work Kashmir.
The college is offering Honours in English from the present academic session, the modalities of which are being worked out with the affiliating University.
Recognising the potential of the college in imparting quality education, the Government of J & K has identified our college as a lead college.
Under this scheme the college will to be a model college both in terms of the human & physical infrastructure and the resourcefulness of its students.
The college takes pride in the yeoman's service it has been rendering in women empowerment in its glorious history of sixty years.
After being graded with “A” by NAAC, Bangalore in 2004, the college is gearing up for reaccreditation in the present academic session.
The year 2004 was a turning point in the history of the Institution. It was granted Grade "A" by National Assessment Accreditation Council,
College has been with Potential for Excellence on September 2009 .
The College has taken significant steps in the implimentation of e-governance and efforts are on for the complete transformation of the college on the modern lines.
GCW is one of the most prestigious institutions of Jammu & Kashmir with a full time enrollment of about 6000 students.
The glorious academic values of this oldest premier under-graduate female institution have been shaped by its institutional history,
which is spread over a span of 61 years. Established on 1950 as an Intermediate residential college and was housed in one of the Maharaja's Palaces
in the heart of Srinagar, Kashmir, with strength of 80 students, 25 of whom were boarders and 13 staff members.
It was affiliated with the University of the Kashmir ( Recognition by UGC under section 2(f), at graduate level in 14 subjects in 1956,under section 12(B)
for post graduate classes in 2004.
The 21st century has brought a drastic revolution in science, which has completely transformed the world.
Today sciences are exploring areas that defy imagination. Right from the beginning, Govt College for Women has been fulfilling the
demand of the female students in the field of science, as this was the only institution offering science subjects at undergraduate level.
This is evident from the fact that majority of the female doctors serving and retired have at some stage ( B.Sc.) studied at Women College.
Since 1950 the college has proved its worth as the highest seat of learning for science subjects. At the moment Botany, Chemistry, Physics,
Zoology, Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, Electronics, Environmental Science, Bio-Technology , Biochemistry, Food and Technology and
Computer Science are taught at Graduate levels in the faculty of Science.
Nobody can deny the significance of social sciences and liberal arts as they contribute in polishing the aesthetic sense of human beings
and are essential for the development of disciplined persons leading to the formation of a healthy society. To fulfill the needs of such persons
and to produce professional social scientists and artists, Govt.College for Women has reached its goal of excellence.
The Department of English, at the age of 60, is the oldest under-graduate department of the College, it still is rooted in the traditions of
commitment and academic excellence. Besides English, Urdu, Kashmiri, Persian, Punjabi, Islamic Studies, Political Science and Multi Media Production
are being offered at the under graduate level. The graduates of Govt. College for Women take their place in moral, intellectual and professional
leadership and in all walks of national life. Among its alumnae are an extra ordinary number of teachers, physicians, principals working in female
colleges of Kashmir, and business executives etc.
