Objectives:
The primary objective of the Department is to inculcate scientific temper among the student community. Students are motivated to observe, analyze and infer for themselves. One of the main objectives of the Department is to generate student interest in biochemical research so that J and K in general and this college in particular can produce scientists of international caliber. As the dearth of skilled scientific manpower is felt very strongly these days, the Department is doing its bit to prepare fertile scientific brains that can bring laurels to the college as well as to the state. The faculty is striving hard to nurture budding scientific talent by assigning projects and mini research works to the students.
Academic Plan for the year 2017
The current academic session is already started and the class work is in full swing. B.Sc 2nd and 3rd semester students are attending the classes very enthusiastically and the faculty of the department is also committed to provide a healthy and conceptive academic atmosphere. In 2017, the Department introduced a Skill Enhancement Course i.e., Lab Diagnostic Course. The course has been designed to cover different lab diagnostic concepts and practices through lecture and laboratory practice. Teaching plan for all the three classes has already been drafted and the lectures will be delivered according to the schedule. By the end of the current month i.e., November 2017, topics for assignments will be allotted to 2nd and 3rd semester students. B.Sc 3rd year students will be assigned topics for seminars and poster presentation, for which they will be properly assessed. The department has already procured the chemicals and equipments that will be required for the current academic session. The department is also involved in the constant up gradation of the lab facilities. Moreover, mini research projects will be allotted to students so as to acquaint them with practical problems encountered during research and get to know for themselves the technicalities of research and innovations.

OPTIMISATION OF RESOURCES:

The Department of Biochemistry shares its lab resources and infrastructure facilities with its sister Department i.e the Department of Biotechnology. In fact, the Department of Biotechnology was started in 2007 in this department. It was only in 2009 that the Department of Biotechnology started to function independently. However, the two departments work in collaboration and share lab resources.

Books and Journals:

Currently the central library of the college has about 5000 books on the subject. The department is thinking of starting its own library. The central library subscribes to biochemical journals.

Internet facility:

The Department presently uses the central internal facility of the college.

Achievements :

• Organized a 2-Day National Workshop on “Advances in Cell and Molecular Biology’ on 27th-28th September 2017 at GCW, M. A. Road, Srinagar. The workshop was funded by Cluster University Srinagar under RUSA.
