HoD’s Message:

Prof. Shabnam Parveen

The department of mathematics at Govt. College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar, is committed towards imparting high-quality education and competitive knowledge of mathematics to all its students. We try to accomplish this not only through the medium of classroom lectures and instruction, but also through student presentations, group discussions, and frequent assignments. This is done to ensure the all-round development of our students into future mathematicians.
The department of mathematics, since its inception in 1962, has been instrumental in providing access to mathematical knowledge to the women of Kashmir valley. The department and its associated faculty feel humbled and honoured at having been part of this attempt to bring gender parity in the field of mathematical knowledge in the valley. Like me, many other alumni of this department too have gone on to pursue careers in a range of fields like engineering, teaching and research. It gives me and the department’s other faculty members great joy to know of their accomplishments.
We hope to continue working hard towards accomplishing our goals of providing competitive and quality education in mathematics to the young minds of the valley.

About Department:

The department of Mathematics at Govt. College for Women, M. A. Road, Srinagar, is one of the oldest and among the most distinguished departments at the college. Mathematics continues to be among the most popular subjects taught here since the department’s inception over 50 years ago in 1962. The undergraduate courses in mathematics that are taught by the department’s faculty enable our students to step into a wide range of careers like engineering, teaching, research, etc., once they finish their Bachelor’s degrees here. In its history of over five decades and counting, the department has been instrumental in providing competitive knowledge of mathematics to thousands of young women of the Kashmir valley. Over the course of the expansion of the department’s influence in the college, the department now also provides mathematical knowledge and skills to the students of the B.C.A. (Bachelor’s in Computer Applications) programme. There has been a perpetual increase in the number of aspirants who seek to enroll in the department’s courses. The choice-based credit system was introduced in 2016 in the college, leading to the former annual syllabi and examination patterns being replaced by a six-semester format of undergraduate study. The mathematics department has been able to quickly adjust to this new system and offers a range of competitive courses in mathematics to the students each semester.
